Prostokvashino – Extremely cute Russian cartoon

Last time we told you about the Russian cartoon “Nu pogodi!” which most of the Russians called the favorite cartoon of their childhood. However, it’s not the only Soviet-made cartoon that conquered the hearts of many generations of Russian children and adults. Our story today is about a series of cartoons about the Prostokvashino.

Prostokvashino – Extremely cute Russian cartoon

Three cartoons of the series were made based on the story “Uncle Fedor, the Dog and the Cat” by Edward Ouspensky. Uncle Fedor is a boy who lives with his parents in the city. His parents call him “uncle”, because he is very independent and intelligent. One day Uncle Fedor meets a homeless cat called Matroskin and takes him home. But his mother does not want the animal and asks Uncle Fedor to take it out of the house. Next day Uncle Fedor and Matroskin run away from home to the village of Prostokvashino, where they meet a homeless dog named Sharik. Then the three of them found an empty house and settled in it. During the three episodes of the series a few stories happen to them.

The first cartoon from the series is called “Three from Prostokvashino”, its premiere took place in 1978. The second one, “Vacations in Prostokvashino”, was released in 1980. And the third one, named “Winter in Prostokvashino”, was released in 1984.

In 2018, the sequel of the series was released. Although it got several million views on YouTube, it also received negative reviews from both viewers and critics. A new style of animation and inappropriate references to modern pop culture were criticized the most. Besides, many viewers were unhappy with sexist jokes and the propaganda of lookism.
